Description

FROM ITALIAN MARKETS

Verdura fresca di stagione, il cocomero barattiere.

The Barattiere Cucumber.

It is a Apulian specialty that is consumed as a cucumber, often raw, or can be used in fruit salads.

The barattiere melon (also known as the barattiere carousel) is an immature fruit of the Cucumis melo L. species, the same one to which the traditional melon belongs. Typical of Puglia's gastronomic tradition, it is harvested and eaten while still green, crunchy and not sweet. It is mainly used as an alternative to cucumber.

It has a spherical or slightly oval shape. The skin is smooth, light green in colour and completely hairless.
The pulp is clear, very juicy, crunchy and with a fresh and delicate flavour. Compared to cucumber, it is slightly sweeter and lacks the typical bitter note.
It is extremely more digestible than classic cucumber thanks to the total absence of cucurbitacin.
